Impervious Gravel vs. Porous Aggregate Paving Systems

The common belief shared by many stormwater engineers and local and state agencies is that gravel parking lots, roads, and driveways are not porous—and for purposes of stormwater runoff, gravel pavements must be treated exactly as if they were concrete and asphaltic pavements. Owners bristle at the mistaken idea that crushed aggregate does not percolate water—that their parking lots and roadways are presumed to shed 100% of rainwater, disqualifying them from meeting stormwater regulations for pervious surfaces.
